Grunge Text Effect

Grunge
Always wanted to learn how to bring out the grungy side of serif text? Here's a simple and efficient way to make it!

Open a new image! Copy and paste a texture of your choice. I used this one.

Create a new 'Text Box' and type in your desired text in any serif font (e.g. Times New Roman). For this tutorial we will be using 'Georgia' and typing out the word "grunge" in lowercase. Since the textured background we are using is ligther, we will make the text black. When you are finished go to the 'Layers' Box and set the blend mode to 'Overlay'. Next, 'Duplicate' the layer by right-clicking on the original text layer and selecting the option.

Go to 'Brushes' and select a brush preset that resembles messy paint strokes. On the text layer called 'Grunge' put some brush marks on top of the text to create a messy effect like this:

Once you are satisfied with your paint strokes, select the text layer, 'Grunge Copy'. Use the same brush you used in the previous step, but this time add brush strokes around, above, or below the text.

Lastly, selected the 'Lasso Tool' and remove random parts (draw out what you want to remove, then press the DELETE button on your keyboard) of the text to create a decayed look.

And you are done!
